(SPS) – President of the Republic and Secretary General of the Polisario Front , Mohamed Abdelaziz, reiterated Saturday in a letter to UN SG Ban Ki-Moon the Polisario Front’s call for the establishment of a mechanism to ensure protection and respect of human rights of Sahrawi in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
“We urge UN to assume its responsibilities pending the completion of the decolonization process in Western Sahara,” wrote the Saharawi President in his letter to Ban Ki-Moon.
The president denounced the unfair trial against the Sahrawi human rights activist, Ennaama Asfari, who sentenced Thursday to 4 months of prison, “because of his political views in favour of self-determination of people of Western Sahara “.
The trial was conducted in a climate of repression and under a strict siege, ten Sahrawi human rights activists have been arrested by Moroccan police at a checkpoint in the west of Tan-Tan (southern Morocco) and another arrested inside the city to prevent them from attending the trial.
“The UN can not remain indifferent to the persistence of such violations of human rights and international law taking place in a territory under its responsibility,” said the president.
“These violations threaten the United Nations efforts to find a just and definitive solution to the conflict in Western Sahara, which respects the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence, “he added
He also called the SG of the UN to intervene “urgently” for the release of Saharawi political prisoners who remain in Moroccan prisons and shed light on the fate of more than 526 missing and 151 Saharawi prisoners of war in the hands of Morocco since the beginning of its military invasion in October 1975.
